Northshore Apparel Ghana Ltd has begun construction of an export-oriented garment factory in Savelugu, in Ghana’s Northern Region. Founder Mohammed Nurideen plans three development phases, with the first intended to provide at least 1,600 jobs. Women, young people and graduates of the Savelugu School for the Deaf are among the intended beneficiaries.

The company’s proposed facilities include more than 5,000 square metres for sewing production and a 4,000-square-metre cutting and design building. A raw-materials warehouse with a racking system is also planned. The Agricultural Development Bank is supporting the project alongside the German-backed Facility Investing for Employment.

Production and export plans

Northshore is the special-purpose vehicle for the Northern Apparel Manufacturing Expansion Development project. A consortium led by MIK Designs, with MUSOF Enterprise as its partner, is promoting the investment. The proposed manufacturing programme covers several garment categories:

  • Sportswear and workwear;
  • Children’s clothing and underwear;
  • Promotional clothing and related items.

The company intends to supply the United States market and pursue other overseas buyers.

Training before recruitment

The company plans six months of pre-hire training for prospective employees. Its recruitment strategy would allow applicants without previous education or work experience to prepare for factory jobs. Cooperation with the Savelugu School for the Deaf would include training packages for its graduates to help them enter employment at the facility.

IFE managing director Steffen Kuhl expects the investment to create local employment opportunities and help reduce migration from rural communities to cities. These are anticipated effects of the project.

Announced financing support

The announced financing plan includes an IFE grant of €2.5 million and a €7.5 million contribution from the grantee. KfW Development Bank established IFE on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

IFE’s grant model uses staged disbursements. Access to a subsequent funding tranche depends on achieving milestones specified in the grant agreement. This programme-level mechanism defines a conditional release process; it does not establish which payments Northshore has received.
